International AI Treaty Takes Centre Stage

In a significant move towards global AI governance, the EU, UK, and US are set to approve the world's first legally binding international AI treaty for signing today. The convention, negotiated by 57 countries, aims to address the potential risks of artificial intelligence while fostering responsible innovation. Lord Chancellor Shabana Mahmood, who will sign the treaty on behalf of the UK, stated: "This convention is a major step to ensuring that these new technologies can be harnessed without eroding our oldest values, like human rights and the rule of law."

The treaty focuses on three key areas: protecting human rights, ensuring appropriate data use and non-discrimination; safeguarding democracy by preventing the undermining of public institutions; and upholding the rule of law through regulation of AI-specific risks. While acknowledging AI's potential benefits, such as increased productivity and improved cancer detection rates, the convention includes crucial safeguards against risks, like the spread of misinformation and the use of biased data leading to unfair outcomes.

UK Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, Peter Kyle, emphasised the treaty's role in building public trust: "AI holds the potential to be the driving force behind new economic growth, a productivity revolution and true transformation in our public services, but that ambition can only be achieved if people have faith and trust in the innovations which will bring about that change." Once ratified, the UK government plans to enhance existing laws, such as the Online Safety Act, to better address AI-related risks. The government will work closely with regulators, devolved administrations, and local authorities to implement the new requirements effectively.

The UK continues to position itself as a leader in AI safety and governance, having hosted the AI Safety Summit, established the world-first AI Safety Institute, and played a key role in framing this convention. Additionally, the government plans to introduce targeted legislation focusing on the most powerful AI models being developed.

This landmark treaty represents a significant step towards global cooperation in managing AI development and deployment, ensuring it aligns with shared values. As AI continues to shape our future, this international agreement sets a precedent for responsible innovation and ethical AI use on a global scale.
