The Year in Review
This will be the last Daily Update of 2024, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support, contributions and interest over the course of the last 12 months.
The team at EPIC has once again enjoyed sharing our reflections on a multitude of topics across the spectrum of social, economic and global issues, along with the occasional whimsical anecdote. We hope that they have been insightful, helpful and – at times – entertaining!
As is traditional at this time of the year, we have selected a few of our favourites of 2024 in case you missed them.
Gold Rush. China goes on a bullion binge, breaking central bank buying records and shaking up global markets.
Paul the Octopus. Octopus-inspired football fortune-telling meets economic analysis: Wealthy Nations, Net Foreign Asset models, and a dash of Paul the Octopus magic predict Euro 2024 glory!
Tortoises and Hares. Are stocks dancing to rational rhythms or wild animal spirits? The jury's still out, but the hare and tortoise might just be playing a strategic game.
Financial Engineering Goes… Right? From toxic CDOs to frozen Russian assets proving that, like Spiderman's web-shooters, it is not the tool but how you use it that matters.
Deep-Sea 'Geobatteries' Spark Oxygen Revolution. Deep-sea 'geobatteries' challenge life's origins, turning ocean's dark depths into an unexpected breath of scientific revelation.
Mars: A New Frontier for Human Ingenuity. Scientists unveil a glitter-sized solution to warm the Red Planet, turning sci-fi dreams of interplanetary colonisation one degree closer to reality.
Fashion Over Family. Is Immigration the Answer? South Korea's demographic time bomb: where YOLO culture, luxury lifestyles, and plummeting birth rates collide in an economic cliff-hanger.
Brook, Bonds, Cups of Tea. The Fed's financial cricket match: money market funds score big, but bond funds are warming up for a potential innings of higher returns.
We wish you all the best for an enjoyable holiday season and a Happy New Year!
